We understand documenting your personal property loss can be daunting, and remembering what you had before the loss can be hard.

It's why we've created State Farm Contents Inventory Aids. These easy-to-use aids include lists of items commonly found in most homes, and you can use them to help complete an inventory of your personal property loss.

They'll also help you put together your personal property claim and expedite your claim settlement.

There are a few ways you can access the contents inventory aids.

The Claims Hub – Check out the Claims Hub. It's an app and online claims center that lets you check the status of your claim, set up electronic payments, access important forms and more.

StateFarm.com – Go to StateFarm.com to download an Excel version you can update electronically or print out the PDF version to write down your list. Both versions are available in English and Spanish.

Your State Farm claim handler – Contact your State Farm claim handler to discuss other ways you can prepare and submit your inventory if you can't use or access the internet.

The contents inventory aids provide a starting point, but we'll need some additional information from you, like the quantity, age, and condition of your items.

You can also add items to the aid if it doesn't have something you lost.

So how does it work? Let's take a look at the Excel version for a living room.

Opening the document brings you to the instruction tab, which you can refer back to at any time.

Click on the inventory tab at the bottom to see the list. Starting at the top, enter the correct quantity for each item you owned. For items you didn't own, you can enter a zero next to the item quantity to show the claim handler you're not claiming that item.

Next, you'll need to complete the age and condition fields for items you owned. This helps in determining the actual cash value of your items. When providing information on the age of an item, it's best if you list it in years and/or months.

The condition of your items is also important when determining the amount of depreciation applied to an item. Let us know if your items are in average, above average, or below average condition compared to what is normally expected for the age of the item. If an item was rarely used, it may be in better condition than expected for a similar item.

For example, a sofa in a formal living room may not be used as much as one in a den or game room. The sofa in the formal living room is likely to be in better condition than expected for its age, so you'd want to mark it as being in above average condition. If an item was new or never used, let us know that too. 

The last column to look at is the notes field. It's where you can provide any additional information you think is important for us to know, such as comments on unique or more expensive items.

This can include things like place of purchase, model, manufacturer, designer, or artist details.

We understand it may be difficult or impossible to provide documentation of your items following a catastrophic event, but if you're able, you can give us things like photographs, video, original store receipts, internet or online purchase receipts, bank or credit card statements, item brochures or manuals for documentation of your items.

Please discuss the specific circumstances of your loss with the assigned claim handler to determine what items may need documentation.

Once you've completed the contents inventory aids, return them to State Farm by email, through the Claims Hub, or work directly with your claim handler for other options. Your claim handler will then review your list and will likely reach out to you with additional questions or clarification to determine if pricing, quantity, age, or condition are accurate.

You'll have the opportunity to review the completed inventory and make any revisions or adjustments if needed. And if you forget to include something on your list, don't worry, you can submit additional items, information or lists as needed.
