What is cyber event, identity restoration, and fraud loss coverage?

With cyber event, identity restoration, and fraud loss coverage, State Farm can help provide coverage for expenses and assistance in restoring your identity. We may also provide coverage if you’re responsible for an elderly parent and have power of attorney. Coverages available only for homeowners, renters & condo unit owners.footnote 1 It is also available for manufactured home policies in some states.

Cyber attack coverage

Helps pay for data recovery and system restoration costs as the direct result of a cyber attack involving a computing device.


Cyber extortion coverage

Helps pay for professional assistance from an expert and response costs for an insured who has experienced a cyber extortion event. A cyber extortion event includes a demand for money to restore access or functionality, or a threat to damage, disable, deny access or distribute content.

 


Identity restoration case management service

A personal case manager may be assigned to help you recover control of your identity and assist you with correcting your credit history with affected agencies and institutions. This can include the case manager working with credit card companies, credit bureaus, creditors and businesses to help you correct records and recover control of your identity. Case management services are available for up to 12 months.


Contingent credit monitoring

You will receive credit monitoring service if you experience a situation that may increase your risk, such as the loss of your purse, wallet, electronic device or paper financial records. An increased risk event does not include the notification of a breach of your personal information.


Fraud coverage

If you have been a victim of a fraud event, fraud loss coverage helps you in a couple of ways.

  • Supplements what is not covered by your homeowners policy, which may already cover limited credit card and debit fraud, check forgery and counterfeit cash.
  • Provides coverage for financial loss arising from a wide range of frauds. These include identity fraud, miscellaneous frauds, as well as intentional and criminal deception to induce you to part voluntarily with something of value.

This coverage is available in some states with the manufactured home and farm/ranch policies. Identity restoration coverage helps provide case management and expense reimbursement incurred as a direct result of identity fraud.

Case management

If you’re a victim of identity theft while carrying State Farm Identity Restoration Insurance, we will help as you attempt to restore your identity or recover from fraud. In addition to expense reimbursement that many insurers cover, we'll also assign a case manager.

The manager

Works directly with your credit card companies, credit bureaus, creditors, and other financial institutions for up to one full year for a covered incident.

Shows what to do after identity theft, and includes examples of letters to send to creditors and credit bureaus, as well as other useful information to aid with the identity restoration process.

Expense reimbursement

In addition to assigning a case manager for up to a year, we'll reimburse you up to $50,000 for necessary and reasonable expenses incurred to restore your identity.footnote 2

Keeping your computer, tablet, and cell phone software up to date is a simple first step. Also, simply check the web address to make sure it belongs to the business you want to purchase from. Discover more tips to prevent identity theft.


Use a unique, strong password everywhere. They should ideally be 12-15 characters and include a combination of uppercase letters, numbers and special characters. Also consider Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) when possible. Learn more ways to prevent your account from being hacked.


Phishing refers to when perpetrators send fraudulent email messages requesting confidential information. The information then allows the perpetrator to gain access to the victim's accounts and steal the victim's identity. Learn about the phishing policy of State Farm.


If your identity has been stolen, you should report the identity theft as soon as possible. You'll want to contact your local police department and the company that you believe the fraud started with. Update all of your log in credentials and possibly freeze your credit or create a fraud alert with the credit bureaus.
